AVELEY beat Hungerford Town in the FA Trophy third round after a dramatic penalty shootout. The Millers narrowly won eight-seven on penalties after the match ended one-all.

Parkside had their hearts in their mouths, but Aveley took a step closer to Wembley as they reached ther last 32 - and pocketed prize money of £4,500.

The visitors took the lead after 25 minutes as Yaoki Nanakorobi headed in at the back post from Sam De St Croix's cross.

The Millers were trailing at the break, a familiar sight of recent times.

Aveley found an equaliser as Joe Gbode reacted first to a goalmouth scramble. He poked his shot home in the 52nd minute.

Both sides stalled slightly after Aveley's leveller. Neither team wanted to lose the game and it did end one-all after 90 minutes.

Penalties preceded as follows:

Multiple misses in sudden death meant the shootout did a full rotation.

However, both team's goalkeepers Jonathan North and Ryan Clarke showed their respective teams how to score, both dispatching their penalties!

Aveley boss Danny Scopes admitted his team won in a way he didn't want, but said: "The boys showed great character today, it looked like we were going to lose the penalty shootout but we flipped it around to winning it, full credit to the squad."

Millers goalkeeper North said: "Cup games against a team in the league below, it's never easy. We kind of did the job really."

Aveley's next league game is away against Braintree Town at the Dunmow Group Stadium. The Vanarama National League South game will take place on Saturday (16 December).

Braintree have won two of their last five league games and sits four places below Aveley in ninth position.
