Tilbury win 5-3 on penalties
IN a remarkable turnaround, in the last 20 minutes of Tuesday evening's (29 October) Isthmian Velocity Cup second round clash, Tilbury clawed back a four-goal deficit and then went on to win a penalty shoot-out.
The late drama emerged after Borough built on two goal half time lead, thanks to efforts from Georgios Arestu with a long-range swerving free kick on 32 minutes and Matthew Young who raced through the Tilbury backline and showed great composure to cut inside and score in added time.
Then further goals from evergreen prolific striker Derek Asamoah, who slipped the marking of Jack Haynes and slotted the ball home on 58 minutes, and Matthew Young, who capitalised on a mistake by keeper Ben Nightingale on 62 minutes, appeared to put the host out of sight.
But Lindell Stewart, making his first start for Dockers, gave visiting fans at Coles Park a little hope with 20 minutes remaining after getting on the end of Jamie Reynolds' cross after he closed down keeper Remy Mitchell to win back possession and squared it to Stewart who emphatically fires home
However, it seemed Tilbury were not going to build on that until a brace from Kieran Jones in the 87th and 88th minutes put them right back in it.
The first came when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area and danced through three challenges before finding the top corner and then Macauley Joynes and Stewart combined well to create an opening which he calmly finished.
And the drama continued in added time, which was into its fifth minute when Haynes equalised from Alfie Fry's cross.
There was still time for Haringey's Jorge Djassi-Sambu to get sent off before the penalty drama after picking up a second yellow card.
Both sides netted their first three penalties, with Stewart, Matt Young and Jones firing home their shots before Lewis Clark made it 4-3. Borough's Manny Yeboah then put his over the bar and the excitement and remarkable comeback was completed when sub Sam Bantick calmly chipped his effort, Panenka-fashion, down the middle to earn a round three trip to Wingate and Finchley, likely to be played next week but a date is yet to be confirmed.
Tilbury will be quickly back in action on Friday evening (1 November) when they defend their lead at the top of the Isthmian North with an trip to title challengers Basildon United (kick-off 7.45pm).
