Dorking Wanderers 3, Aveley 0
MILLERS were unable to repeat their early season surprise, when they beat high-profile Dorking at Parkside in September.
To do so on Wanderers' own turf at the Meadowbank Stadium was always a monumental task and Aveley rarely looking like pulling off a shock, particularly as they were reduced to ten men for part of the match – a repeat of what happened in September.
The ten men proved victorious in the first encounter, much to the annoyance of Wanderers' social media legend of a manager, Marc White, but this time he was in a more buoyant mood after 90 minutes following what was a reasonably comfortable win that sustains their Vanarama National League South promotion challenge.
Seeking a return ton the National League's top flight at the first time of asking, Dorking are now third, three points behind leaders Worthing. In contrast Millers are third from bottom, ten points behind safety but with a match in hand on 20th placed Welling United.
Tuesday's (28 January) match started with little between the sides in the early stages, but Dorking gradually assumed control, and in the 19th minute they got the opening goal from the penalty spot, after Luke Holness was penalised and Rob Milson sent James Holden the wrong way with his strike from the spot.
Millers struggled to break down Dorking's solid defence and create clear chances. Central defender Brooklyn Kabongolo saw his effort comfortably saved by the Dorking keeper at the end of a rare attack, but the visitors were probably happy going into the break just one goal down.
However, just ten minutes into the second half Dorking doubled their lead through forward Jason Prior. Rhys Murphy played a through ball to Carter who squared to Prior with the forward applying the simple finish to make it two-nil.
All hopes of a spirited Aveley comeback ended with Kabongolo shown a second bookable offence and given his marching orders reducing Millers to ten men with 20 minutes to go.
The final blow came in the 80th minute when Jordan Norville-Williams sealed the victory for Dorking. He slipped into the box and fired an effort across Holden and into the bottom corner for his first goal for Dorking this season.
Millers move on with another away fixture this coming weekend (Saturday, 1 February) when they travel to Chippenham.
