Wonderwoman and supersub - Thurrock's Michelle Agyemang is a national hero

THURROCK-born footballer Michelle Agyemang is once again the toast of a nation after scoring the dramatic equaliser, six minutes into added time, that helped England reach the finals of the 2025 Women's European Championships.
19-year-old Michelle from South Ockendon had already proved her worth with the equaliser in the quarter-final against Sweden, but somehow surpassed that with tonight's (Tuesday, 22 July) goal that forced extra time.
Afterwards the world's media acclaimed her heroics, describing her as Wondergirl and supersub!
The striker kept England in the tournament when she came off the bench to equalise in the 96th minute of normal time.
And, with a minute left in the extra period, fellow substitute Chloe Kelly drilled home the rebound after her penalty was saved to send a delirious England into the final – their third major appearance in six years.
They will play the winner of Wednesday's semi-final tie between Euro 2022 runners-up Germany and world champions Spain in Basel on Sunday.
If it's Spain, it will be a chance for England to avenge their World cup final defeat in 2023, while if Germany come through it will be a repeat of the 2002 final when England beat them 2-1. The Arsenal forward, who spent last season on loan at Brighton, was a ball girl at Wembley four years ago
For much of tonight's semi-final it looked as if England might go out after Italy scored with their first shot on target and their first touch inside England's penalty box just after the half hour.
England struggled to get back into the match until Agyemang came of the bench and showed immense calmness to convert the equaliser deep in added time.
Speaking after the match she said: "It means the world to me and I'm so grateful. I'm so grateful to God. Four years ago I was a kid, throwing balls to some of these girls but now I'm here playing with them. It's a great opportunity and I'm so glad I'm here.
"To be doing this at this level, to be helping out this team is more than what I could have wished for so, I'm so grateful to be here."
"Most of these girls I haven't known for more than two months but it shows the togetherness we have as a team."
