Complex hosts day of events to mark borough's catastrophic flooding

VOLUNTEERS at Thurrock Museum will be marking the 70th anniversary of the 1953 floods in Thurrock with an exhibition at the Thameside Complex and a special day of events on Saturday, 28 January.

It will be one of a number of events across the borough marking the great flood of '53 and offers the opportunity to engage in activities and listen to recollections of the disaster.

The time activity listing for the day is:

  • 10am-11am Family activity Ground floor café area
  • 11.10 - 11.20 TBC Storytime in library area Library children's area
  • 11.30 - 12.30 Family activity Ground floor café area
  • 12.40 - 12.50pm TBC Storytime in library area Library children's area
  • 1pm - 2pm Family activity Ground floor café area
  • 3.30pm - 4.15pm Talk: The Perfect Storm 2nd flood registrar's ceremony room

During the day there will be other none time-sensitive activities, including: Free flow activities:

  • - Take a selfie with our boat in front of the iconic image of the civic square in the flood
  • - Find out how the floods impacted Thurrock and read some of the personal accounts of people's experiences in the museum volunteers' display in the gallery on the ground floor
  • - Do you have a memory of the '53 floods which you would like to share? Neil Woodbridge will be available to record your story for future posterity.
  • - How many origami boats can you spot in the Museum displays? Enter your answer into a prize draw to win free family tickets to the Theatre's Wicked Wednesdays show.
  • - See how the Environment agency tackle flooding and search for hidden hazards in their flood tank! TBC: Walk-on map of the Thames
  • - TBC: Screens playing a video of the floods produced by then-local industry Van Den Berghs and Jurgens.

The event ends at 4.30
