A matter of convenience: Local stores win hearts, minds and thanks as they keep their communities supplied

By Neil Speight 8th Apr 2020

RESIDENTS across Thurrock are continuing to praise their local stores - which are reporting a big rise in shoppers as people turn away from the superstores where there are long waiting times.

In East Tilbury residents have issued thanks and praise to the operators of the village Post Office and convenience store.

One contacted Thurrock Nub News to say: "Maxine and her partner Ron need to know that they are appreciated for everything they do to help the community.

"Over the last few weeks half the staff work team have been off and keeping the shop open to serve the community has not been easy but Maxine and Ron have worked from 5.30am till 7pm seven days a week for the past few weeks. They have measures in place that make the store safe and are even doing deliveries to people who can't get out or who are self-isolating.

"They put everyone before themselves."

And there has been similar feedback at Blackshots General Store in Grays which has also introduced an online service for local people.

Owner Jag Singh says: "We have been overwhelmed by the amazing messages, feedback and support from our local community for our 'click and collect' service.

"We now have more than 250 products on www.Blackshots.co.uk and we are adding more products each day so customers are guaranteed in getting their products without any disappointments.

"With everyone's advice and feedback from the local community, I am proud to say we have made the whole shopping experience safe and secure.

"It's unlike big stores where you are waiting up to an hour in a queue full of people, then being disappointed they don't have what you came in for."

And at Socketts Heath there has been a lot of comment about the warm welcome provided at the Co-op Store, which has overcome staffing issues by bringing in new members of the team.

University and college students Lucy Honeywell and Becca Honeywell have been signed up as temporary staff and have taken to social media to share the message to local shoppers about local shops: "We are proud to be serving the community. #ItsWhatWeDo."
