EXPERIENCED firefighters in Grays will be joined by new recruits after the latest cohort of 16 new recruits and two new control operators joined Essex County Fire and Rescue Service's ranks.
They were welcomed to the service when a passing out ceremony took place at the Service Training Centre in Witham in front of Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Rick Hylton and Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Joel Charles.
The new recruits showcased their training by performing two drills while proud family, friends and colleagues watched on.

Speaking at the ceremony Mr Hylton said: "This is one of my favourite events in my calendar where I have the chance to welcome my new colleagues to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Huge congratulations to each and every one of you and a very well done.
"To be stood here today has taken a huge amount of dedication, determination and self-sacrifice. It is a real pleasure and privilege to be here, congratulations to you all.
"I am immensely proud of you, I know your loved ones are and you should be rightly proud of yourselves. I very much, alongside my team, look forward to welcoming you into the service and supporting you throughout your career."
Mr Charles highlighted the trusted role firefighters and fire control operators play in serving the communities of Essex.
He said: "The newest crop of firefighters and control operators are extraordinary people. They have exceeded expectations by showing a high level of professionalism during the Service's intensive training programme. They will now play a key role in maintaining trust in the Service by tackling blazes, answering 999 calls and promoting the importance of fire safety.

"There will be times when they are called upon to respond to dangerous situations, work to coordinate communications during such major incidents and face the consequences of tragic events. A lot will be asked of them. It takes courage to be prepared to face those situations.
"There is a remarkable sense of purpose driving these new firefighters and control operators as they embark on their careers serving the public. The county will be forever grateful for the dedication and resilience they will go on to demonstrate."

Firefighter Joe Wheeler was presented with the top recruit award and was recognised for his determination, professionalism and teamwork throughout the course.
The firefighters will be heading to Basildon, Brentwood, Clacton, Colchester, Grays, Harlow, Leigh and Rayleigh Weir fire stations and control operators will be based at the control room at Service Headquarters at Kelvedon Park.
