A TILBURY woman has taken to social media to highlight a shocking case of violence, unsavory peer pressure and appalling behavior by adults concerning her 13-year-old niece.
Police are now investigating the incident which saw the girl, a student at the Gateway Academy, 'take a beating' because she would not get involved in a fight.
Her aunt has told what happened during the incident in Tilbury, telling Nub News: "My niece went to the Daisy Field after she got a text message to go there, where she thought she was meeting friends.
"When she arrived she was challenged by a young girl who was with a large number of boys.
"The girl was continuously asking my niece to fight and my niece refused. There were a lot of people there and she didn't feel safe. She also doesn't like to fight. "They wouldn't leave her alone and would not let her leave the field. "At some point the other girl's uncle and her mother arrived with a dog but far from intervening, they were urging my niece to have the fight. "She continued to refuse to and became extremely anxious and managed to run away but other young people followed her as she fled through Leighton Gardens, Melba Gardens and Feenan Highway and she was cornered by them at Gainsborough Avenue where the man with the dog told her he would 'set in on ' her. The dog was acting in an aggressive manner and really scared my niece. "She was absolutely petrified and began to cry. Then a boy pushed her to the ground and the 13 year old girl repeatedly slapped whilst everyone watched, including the adults. The girl's mum even cheered her on. "My niece would not respond by fighting had to take the beating before being allowed to leave. It's just disgusting and even more so that adults were encouraging it." The matter has been reported to police. If anyone has any information they can pass it on anonymously by calling 101 or via the Crimestoppers website. The family have also asked if anyone who has any doorbell or dashcam footage or CCTV featuring any of the incident, which happened on Monday, 31 January between 3 and 4pm, to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact family members Hayley Hughes or Samantha Jane Mitchell.
