NEW jobs could be created if permission is granted for a new leisure facility on the borough border with Havering.

Aveley Lakes on Romford Road is former clay and gravel extraction site which is currently operating as a fishing lake.

Plans have now been submitted to Thurrock Council to upgrade the facility on the 35 acre lake site to a watersports and activity centre. The lakes, stocked with trout and carp, are currently used by a private fishing club.

Under plans submitted the site, described as a 'spectacular place to be, would be developed to include buildings that facilitate sailing, windsurfing, rowing, scuba diving and canoeing and there would be an office and administrative centre including a shop. Plans also include a home for the site manager.

In total there would be four buildings, two on the site of existing buildings and two by the lakeside to facilitate the unpowered water sports.

All the new buildings will be eco-friendly, with heating provided from a ground source heat pump.

The applicants say the new development will create a small number of jobs and the facility will be open to the public and local schools, colleges and businesses.

You can read the full planning statement from the applicants here.

The application details and an opportunity to comment can be found here Demolition of three existing buildings and the continued use of the site (including lakes) for leisure (use class D2) with the addition of an outdoor water sport facility (with sailing, surfing, rowing, scuba diving and canoeing) with two buildings for these sporting activities and a multi-use building for ancillary office, shop, medical room, toilets, food preparation and eating areas and separate manager's house, wooden jetties for fishing and associated parking and access roads. ANOTHER rural project has also been submitted which will involve excavation and deposition of waste material on a local landscape.

The net result will be the creation of an enhanced wildlife reserve at Fobbing Marshes. Essex Wildlife Trust's Fobbing Marsh nature reserve is a block of remnant Thames Estuary coastal grazing marsh on the upper part of Holehaven Creek, just upstream of the Fobbing Horse coastal defence barrier.

Planners are advised the site is very well situated to contribute to the network of developing restoration sites nearby, largely managed by the RSPB. It is also immediately next to the tidal creek and saltmarsh of Holehouse Creek and Vange Creek, which further increase the potential of the reserve.
