LEADERS of Thurrock's Black and Minority Ethnic group (BME) have condemned the social media attacks and other discriminatory action against England's black footballers after the Euro 2020 final.

Following the penalty shoot-out when three players missed penalties there were many adverse comments about the players on social media and some acts of graffiti and vandalism in the players home towns.

A statement from former borough mayor Tunde Ojetola a leading figure in Thurrock BME says: "Thurrock BME is shocked and appalled at the racist messages and comments that were targeted at some of the footballers that ably represented our country in the recently concluded Euro 2020.

"We should be proud of their achievements and celebrate them for getting to the finals for the first time in over half a century.

"We believe that more needs to be done to stamp out racism in football and in our communities.

Thurrock BME will continue to work with the authorities to ensure that we are one community."
