A WILDLIFE charoty is seeking volunteers to help maintain Oliver Road Lagoons, a beautiful 40-hectare site home to a myriad of wildlife species in West Thurrock.
The volunteers are needed to carry out jobs like vegetation clearance, surveying, reedbed cutting, litter picking, and felling.
The area is owned by the Land Trust and managed by Essex Wildlife Trust.
Oliver Road Lagoons in Thurrock, sometimes known as West Thurrock Marsh, is a 40-hectare site home to a myriad of wildlife species – including the incredibly rare Distinguished Jumping Spider.
The Land Trust is working closely with Natural England and managing partners Essex Wildlife Trust and Buglife, to realise the vast potential of this site, which has not yet been opened to the public. This long-term partnership project will seek to provide a habitat to protect both invertebrates and birds at West Thurrock.
The site, formerly home to Thurrock Power Station, contains Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), which has been extremely beneficial for wildlife, creating a mosaic of wildflower-rich habitats, leading to over 1,300 different species of invertebrates, bird and reptiles, of which around 50 species are classified as endangered, making this site their home.
You need to be over 18 and available Wednesdays, 10.15am to 3pm. No experience is necessary. PPE and training given.
