THERE is just over a week left for residents in the borough to have their say on a bid by Thurrock Council to bring two of its parks 'back to life.

The council is planning investment in a dilapidated play and fitness area in Corringham Town Park and to create a new space at Dilkes Park in South Ockendon.

The adi-Zone area of Corringham Town Park opened in time for the 2012 Olympics but over the years it has been subject to misuse and vandalism. It has been closed since June 2024 because of safety concerns.

The initial cost of the zone was £167,000 and was funded by money from Partnership for Schools, Veolia Mardyke Trust, Corringham and Community Forum and Thurrock Council.

When it opened John King, then headteacher of nearby Gable Hall School said: "I am absolutely delighted that the adi-Zone is to be built, it will be a welcome asset to the town. It will be great for the teenagers who go to Gable Hall to use the park when it's open.

"Corringham was chosen because there is not much currently in the area to entertain older children and teenagers, it will be perfect."

Dilkes Park.

Across the borough, at Dilkes Park, the council says its aim is to create a vibrant, welcoming space that people of all ages can enjoy.

Inviting people to take part in the consultation, the council says: "Whether you're a parent looking for safe play facilities, a dog walker who loves open space, or just someone who enjoys fresh air and community spirit, this is your chance to have a say.

"Your feedback will directly influence the design and features of both parks. This is about making sure the spaces reflect what local people actually want and need, whether that's new play areas, fitness zones, or simply safe and welcoming places to spend time.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of two important community spaces and ensure they're enjoyed for many years to come.

Both surveys close on Sunday, 28 September. To take part, follow the links below:

Concerns about the state of the wider Corringham Town Park are not new. In January 2021 Thurrock Nub News reported on worries about the general state of the park and its footpaths.

That concern led to some work being carried out, but it was to a poor standard and residents and the Friends of Corringham Town Park continued to complain.

Paths at Corringham Town Park were recently renovated.

Earlier this year ward councillor Roy Jones took up cudgels on their behalf and in August a new phase of improvement work was started which including the laying of new, more robust paths.
