THURROCK Council has explained why local cemeteries have been left unkempt and overgrown, blaming 'operational issues and equipment breakdowns' in the wake of public concern.

Last week Thurrock Nub News highlighted those concerns after  visiting borough cemeteries.

We photographed knee-length grass around graves and heavy weed growth.

Today (Thursday, 30 May), the council announced: "We have teams mowing in West Thurrock, North Stifford and Stanford cemeteries today" though it did not go into detail about what the problems have been.

The statement continued: "Throughout this week and next, teams will be going to all cemeteries to cut the grass.

"Operational issues and equipment breakdowns had hampered work over the last few weeks. These have been resolved.

"Yesterday crews mowed Corringham and Stanford cemeteries and the grass has already been cut at the seven smaller churchyards the council manages.

I"Mowing is also set to take place at both Grays cemeteries, Aveley, Chadwell St Mary and North Ockendon cemeteries next week.

"A more consistent service will ensure that work will continue regularly throughout the spring and summer growing seasons."
