DESPITE some initial confusion, Thurrock Council has now identified 27 borough-based projects as it seeks to spend the first instalment of more than £1.4 million it was allocated by the government in a bid to improve footpaths and cycleways in the borough.

Last month Thurrock Nub News reported on a commitment by Transport secretary Grant Shapps to give Thurrock £1,438,000 to invest on local schemes to help regenerate local economies and make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The council responded at the time by saying they were not sure about what was happening!

However, today (Tuesday, 23 June) the council said it had come up with ideas to spend the first £288,000 to create new walking and cycling transport infrastructure linking schools, employment hubs and shopping and leisure sites across the borough.

Council leader Cllr Rob Gledhill, said: "This funding will allow us to create wider footways and cycling infrastructure to help people get to schools, shops and employment while avoiding public transport and still following social distancing guidance.

"We have identified 27 projects which will have both short and longer term benefits to safe and sustainable travel across the borough. These will be shared with ward councillors for comment. With the short delivery time we have to ensure this grant of taxpayers money is spent wisely and delivers these projects as quickly as possible."

Transport and Highways portfolio holder Ben Maney added: "The £288,000 is the first installment and is intended to fund quick and temporary schemes."

The Government's Active Transport Travel Fund was created to help resolve issues highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic and allow councils to deliver safe travel links which allow for social distancing and help avoid overcrowding on public transport.

Subject to confirmation of the funding, all projects must be completed within eight weeks.
