Editor does his bit to help out stretched emergency services

WITH emergency services stretched across the region, Thurrock Nub News did its bit this afternoon to make things a little safer.

Site editor Neil Speight was driving on the approach road to the North Stifford roundabout from Grays when he spotted a roadworks sign in a dangerous condition.

It was on the brink of flying into the road and could have caused a crash or injury.

Several police cars and officers were close by attending a two vehicle crash which had blocked the roundabout.

Having gone around the diversion Mr Speight approached officers to advise them of the danger.

He takes up the story: "The officer in charge said he couldn't spare anyone or deal with it, even though I pointed out the severity of the danger.

"I felt it was important to make it safe so asked if they had a problem with me dealing with it. They didn't, so I did.

"The actual sign was only held on to the framework by one rivet by the time I got to it and it was flailing in the wind. The frame itself was pretty well held by sand bangs but with a couple of big heaves I got it toppled over and safe.

"It was a sign related to the A13 closure so I am sure it will be recovered safely tonight."
