'Intoxicated' lorry crash driver who went round roundabout wrong way is banned

By Neil Speight   12th Feb 2020

A LORRY driver who failed to provide a breath test after travelling the wrong way around a roundabout and crashing in West Thurrock has received a three-year ban.

Jan Przepiorkka, 68, of no fixed address, appeared at Basildon Magistrates' Court yesterday, Tuesday 11 February, where he was disqualified from driving for 36 month and was ordered to pay £620 courts costs and a £122 victim surcharge for failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

He received a six weeks prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

At around 9.50pm on Saturday 16 November 2019, police received reports of a collision on the A1306 involving a heavy goods vehicle and a car on a roundabout.

Przepiorkha had driven his lorry the wrong away around the roundabout. There were no injuries.

A police statement says: "We attended the scene and had concerns Przepiorkka was intoxicated.

"We asked him to provide a specimen of breath but he inflated his cheeks before refused to blow into the device on two occasions.

"On the third attempt in blew but did put the device to his lips. He was arrested at the scene and charged the following day."

Investigating officer PC Steve Smith, of Chigwell Roads Policing Unit, said: "Przepiorkka was driving a large vehicle when the collision occurred. Fortunately no was harmed.

"When we arrived, he fell out of his cab and we immediately had concerns about his actions and demeanour.

"While he agreed to do a roadside breath test, he was being disruptive – either refusing to blow into the machine or not following instructions.

"This conviction shows you will still receiving a driving ban for failing to assist. In this case Przepiorkka received a three year ban."
