Fire crews issue message to public after flurry of field fires
By Nub News Reporter 12th Jul 2026
FIRE crews are urging people across Essex to take action after a spike in large field fires during the recent hot weather.
Among the most recent was a blaze close to homes in Chadwell St Mary yesterday (Saturday, 11 July).
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has reported six field fires within a 48-hour period, raising concerns about wildfire risks as temperatures remain high.

The blazes have affected crops, grassland and heathland, putting livelihoods, wildlife and nearby communities under increasing pressure.
Crews say dry conditions mean fires can spread rapidly, often requiring significant resources and causing disruption through road closures and cordons.
Fire chiefs are now urging those living and working in rural areas to take precautions and be prepared to report incidents quickly.
They warn that many wildfires are started by human activity, including discarded cigarettes, barbecues and bonfires during dry weather.
Residents are being advised to avoid lighting fires outdoors, dispose of smoking materials safely and consider packing picnics instead of using barbecues in open areas.
People are also encouraged to report any fires immediately by calling 999 and to use location tools such as what3words to help crews respond quickly.
Ollie Everott, rural engagement officer at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Rural communities have a higher risk of wildfires being surrounded by the countryside and we really need local residents to help us.
"Not only are fires devastating for homeowners and landowners, they often spread out of control quickly through dry vegetation which requires a lot of our resources to put the fire out.
"We need everyone's help to prevent wildfires this summer and would ask everyone enjoying our countryside to be mindful of the things that could start fires like bonfires, barbeques, discarded cigarettes and litter.
"We can all play a part in keeping our countryside safe this summer.
"We need help from you to not only prevent fires from happening in the first place but to report incidents as quickly as possible.
"Early reporting and good preparation can make a significant difference in preventing small fires from becoming large-scale incidents, helping us protect Essex's farms, crops and rural communities."
