From reed bed to remand room. Drink driver's bid to escape was thwarted by chasing officers

POLICE have given details of a foot chase through a reed bed that ended with the arrest of a man who has now been charged with drink driving.
The incident was played out on the London gateway Logistics Park near Stanford-le-Hope on the morning of Sunday, 14 September, when a suspected drink driver thought he could outsmart both security and officers by making a daring escape... through a swamp!
After being spotted on the park, the man ditched his vehicle and legged it into the reeds — which were taller than some of the chasing officers.
An eagle-eyed officer spotted the man trying to scale a fence into an industrial unit. Officers moved in and found him lying low (literally) among the reeds, hoping to blend in with the local wildlife.
The 44-year-old Kent man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to Grays custody, where he was breathalysed.
The man blew 79. For context, the legal limit in England is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath so he was more than double the legal limit!
He's now been charged with 'driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit' and will be appearing in court on Tuesday, 30 October.
