Linford's "Two Daves" celebrated for decades of dedication

ON the eve of a sporting weekend, a village community in Thurrock has paid tribute to two exceptional community volunteers.
This week, over Saturday and Sunday, sees the Linford Boys and Girls Club annual sporting event on the village recreation ground, which is open to all and includes a barbecue, bar and other attractions. Sponsored by DP World London gateway, the fun will run from 10am till about 4pm on both days.
The weekend has become a village fixture but would not have happened without the work of two men.

For generations in Linford, the names Dave Patients and Dave Bulmer have been synonymous with community dedication and Linford Wanderers.
And the dynamic duo have now said they will be stepping back from their roles – with a wave of gratitude coming from the community.
A statement on behalf of villagers says: "As these local legends step back from the daily operations of the Linford Wanderers Boys Club, the community expresses its heartfelt gratitude for their enduring legacy. Linford Wanderers is a household name, recognized for both its football program and its thriving Boys and Girls Clubs – a testament to the dedication of the 'two Daves'.
"To understand its significance, consider Linford's transformation in the mid-to-late 1960s. Major housing developments turned the village from a quiet backwater into a vibrant, energetic community.
"Yet, this growth exposed a serious lack of recreational facilities. The challenge was there, the objectives understood, Linford Wanderers Football and Sports Club was formed, in 1973.
"The Boys Club followed in 1974, and the Girls Club a year later, providing weekly sports and social activities for children aged 7 to 15.
"Over the years, the sports club expanded to include competitions, camps, sports weekends, and more, becoming an integral part of community life.

"In 1985, Linford Wanderers joined the Essex Association of Boys Clubs, further enriching its social and sporting profile. The club now regularly represents the county at national events.
"Even during the challenging Covid pandemic, Dave Patients, as president, led the committee in finding innovative ways to safely bring children back together, making Linford Wanderers the first club in the area to resume activities.
"While stepping back from the day-to-day logistics of the club, the "two Daves" continue to volunteer their time.
"You might spot Dave Patients marking the track for the sports weekend or Dave Bulmer assisting the new Boys Club leader on a Monday night.
"For their countless hours of dedication, energy, and care, Dave Patients and Dave Bulmer, along with their supportive wives, Mary and Anne, deserve our deepest appreciation.
"From past to present, the community says: Thank you!"
