Thurrock remembered Srebrenica with new memorial

A FLAG-raising and a service with memorial unveiling took place in Grays today (Friday, 11 July) as Thurrock remembered Srebrenica.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, where more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in what the UN has described as the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.
Thurrock Council hosted a flag raising at the civic offices and shortly afterwards a service took place at Grays Town Park, where a new memorial to remember all of those that lost their lives, as well as those who continue to live with the grief and loss of the Srebrenica genocide was revealed.
Thurrock was – and remains – a place of safety and sanctuary for refugees who fled the massacre.

Today's event was addressed by Mayor, Cllr Sue Shinnick, who raised the Flag of Remembrance outside the Town Hall. His Excellency Osman Topgagic, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina reminded those gathered of the theme of today's commemorations: 'Remember Yesterday, Act Today'.
Borough MP Jen Craft MP also spoke at the civic offices.
At Grays Town Park Richard Burden, Director of Remembering Srebrenica UK, spoke with passion about the events of 30 years ago and noted that the memorial stone was the first in England to mark the events in Europe three decades ago.
Cllr Lynn Worrall, Leader of the Council, and Cllr John Kent reflected on Thurrock's special significance for Bosnian refugees, which is detailed on the council's website.
