EFFORTS have been made to calm tensions that have arisen in Tilbury following social media publication of a video made by two Muslims in the town.

The video contained derogatory comments about Tilbury, which have caused alarm and concern and talk of a counter protest outside a mosque off St Chads Road in the town.

It was scheduled for the coming weekend, though Thurrock Nub News understands it has now been called off.

Elders at the mosque have disassociated themselves with the video and have barred its two makers from future attendance.

Police are aware of the situation and are monitoring events.

A statement has also been issued by Tilbury Community Forum, that was issued last night (Wednesday, 22 February).

It reads: "The Forum were contacted yesterday via an official channel to make us aware of a video being circulated on social media, filmed outside the Mosque on St Chads Road.

"The comments made in this video were outrageous, inflammatory and are neither appreciated or welcome in this community.

"Due to the alarming content of the post we reached out to the management team at the Mosque to bring this video to their attention as the attitudes expressed by these individuals goes against the actual Tilbury residents who use it.

"The Mosque Management Committee have asked that we share their attached statement."

The Mosque owners calling for the makers of the video to face police action is ridiculous and nothing more than an excersise in appeasing public anger. What they are really angered by is the attention the video has giving to the planning application.

Having seen the planning documents it is clear that they were not accurate, clear and precise, which is a mandatory requirement. It did not correctly identify key parts of the proposal and relevant details that set out a justification for the proposal. The public consultation process did not clearly state that "A Place Of Worship", which they must of known of, was in fact a Mosque.

In the statement from the Mosque given to Thurrock Nub News, the premises was clearly referred to as a Mosque 8 times and not once as "a place of worship".

Extracts from the planning report.
Retrospective application for the variation of conditions Nos.2 (Plans) and 3 (Use Restriction) following grant of planning permission of planning permission ref. 17/01161/FUL (Change of use of shop (A1) to education and cultural centre (D1)) to include use for worship

The addition of worship to the consented uses at the property would not change the noise or number of people who can use the building.

The applicant is advised that the addition of worship use applies strictly to the layout shown on the plans submitted. Any additional floor area does not form part of this permission.

The proposed change would have minimal impact upon the neighbouring units and
surrounding area in comparison to the approved scheme and Emergency Planning
and Environmental Health have raised no objection. The Council’s Highways Officer
requested further information regarding parking. "Nonetheless, due to the internal size of the unit and how many people can fit into this space, it is not considered a refusal on highways grounds would be reasonable". The proposed amendment is minor in nature when compared to the recent extant planning permission. Accordingly, the application is considered to be acceptable.

The application has been assessed on the specific information put forward
in the application. Other uses would require a reassessment of the proposals in the interests of amenity and to ensure that the development remains integrated with it's immediate as required by policy PMD1 of the adopted Thurrock LDF Core Strategy and Policies for the Management of Development DPD [2015].
