MP calls on government not to extend smoking ban in external areas of pubs and restaurants
EAST Thurrock MP James McMurdock has issued a stark warning about the future of British pubs in light of government plans that suggest an extension of the indoor smoking ban to outdoor areas, including beer gardens, restaurant terraces, and pavements outside pubs.
The rumoured changes, which could also impact outdoor areas around sports stadiums, nightclubs, and universities, have raised serious concerns among pub owners and patrons alike.
Mr McMurdock has described the potential ban as an existential threat to the traditional British pub, stating:
"This ban on smoking in pub gardens or on pavements outside pubs could be the final blow to the traditional pub. Pubs have already faced immense challenges in recent years, and this could seal their fate," he said.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has not ruled out the possibility of such a move, commenting: "We are going to take decisions in this space. More details will be revealed, but this is a preventable cause of deaths, and we've got to take action to reduce the burden on the NHS and reduce the burden on the taxpayer."
While Mr McMurdock acknowledges the importance of public health, he questions whether these proposals would effectively address the health concerns cited and is urging the government to consider the broader economic and social implications for the pub sector and local communities:
The South Basildon and East Thurrock Reform MP adds: "This isn't just about smoking; it's about jobs and businesses.
"Pubs in Basildon and Thurrock aren't merely economic entities—they are places where communities come together. These measures could lead to reduced foot traffic, lower economic activity, and social isolation for many whose main outlet is their local pub. People don't need or want a nanny state dictating what they can and cannot do."
He warns that extending smoking bans to outdoor areas will result in fewer customers visiting pubs and bars, threatening thousands of jobs in the hospitality industry, saying: "Almost a million people contribute to making a pint possible—from scientists and farmers to draymen, delivery drivers, and pub workers. They've already faced tough times, and they've worked hard to continue serving our communities. But Britain remains one of the most heavily taxed countries for a pint."
Ahead of the next Budget, Mr McMurdock is calling for measures to protect the pub industry: "The government must think carefully about these proposals. We cannot afford to do more harm than good. The Great British Pub is not just a business; it's a community hub."
He called on his constituents and pub-goers across the country to share their views with him and said they were loud and clear; they do not support the proposed ban.
"Save the Local Pub isn't just a slogan; it's a campaign to preserve a cornerstone of our culture. Our pubs need support now more than ever."
