THURROCK Council leader Cllr Rob Gledhill has flagged up an increase in the number of under 18s testing positive for Covid-19 in the borough.

In his weekly social media message to residents Cllr Gledhill says: "As parents and children across the borough get ready for the return to school, it's a good time to reflect on the importance of continuing to follow the current government guidance and ensuring that everyone who is eligible for a vaccine is getting one.

"All 16 and 17 year olds have now been offered a COVID-19 vaccination, and by taking up this offer they can help to protect themselves, their school-mates, their families and the wider community.

"For these young people, they don't need to register with a GP or have an NHS number to be vaccinated, although it will make the process easier if they bring that along to a walk-in centre or to their appointment.

"We are continuing to see increases in those aged under 18 testing positive for COVID-19, so it really is important young people are doing everything they can to help to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in our borough.

"Our children and young people have had a very challenging past year and we want to make sure that by working together we do all we can to minimise future further disruption to their education.

"With some still going on staycations and the bank holiday approaching, I would remind everyone to stay safe and follow the current guidance for the UK, and for those travelling to and returning from overseas, to stay alert to any changes of the travel guidance or rules for the country they are visiting as they can change quickly."
