Park volunteers pledge to replace benches destroyed by late night arson attack

POLICE are investigating an arson attack on benches at Hardie Park in Stanford-le-Hope which has shocked volunteers who look after the community facility, which includes a popular café.
The fire was started deliberately, reportedly by a group of youths who had obtained petrol from a nearby service station.
Local crews tackled the blaze and an Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a fire in the park at 11.44pm last night.
"On arrival, crews reported a number of trees were on fire and worked to put the fire out by 12.08am. The fire was caused deliberately."
Essex police have confirmed an investigation into the incident is ongoing and they will be talking to the operators of the service station to check potential CCTV footage.
A statement from the Passionate About Hardie Park community group says: "Two of our park benches were destroyed in an act of vandalism and arson. It's heartbreaking to see something that the community fundraised for left like this.
"We are in touch with the relevant authorities regarding the incident. In the meantime, please do keep clear of the damaged area while we make it safe.
"We'll be working hard to replace what has been lost — and if anyone would like to help towards the cost, you can do so here: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/6470#!/DonationDetails
"Thank you, as always, for standing with us and helping keep Hardie Park a welcoming space for everyone."

Meanwhile Essex Fire and Rescue Service has shared a message with local residents, saying: "Do you have you any information about deliberate fires in your area?
"Even small outdoor fires can be dangerous and they place additional stress on our limited resources – dealing with a nuisance fire affects our ability to respond to more serious incidents like house fires or road traffic collisions.
"To help us prevent these fires from happening and to keep everyone who lives, works and travels in Essex safe, we have teamed up with the independent charity FireStoppers.
"If you have information regarding a deliberate fire, you can tell us what you know, 100% anonymously. We are interested in what you know, not your identity.
