Police step out on the front foot in battle against violence towards women and girls - but Thurrock Council cuts award-winning safety staff

COMMUNITY policing officers in Thurrock have been out and about across the borough in an initiative aiming to counter the threat of violence against women and girls.
Officers from the Thurrock Division recently held 'Walk and Talk' patrols in the Ockendon area, aimed at addressing the issue.
In a statement afterwards the force said: "It was heartening to see so many women and girls from our community come forward to engage with our officers.
"They shared their concerns, discussed their experiences, and provided valuable feedback on local areas where they felt most vulnerable. Your participation and insights are vital in helping us build safer, more supportive communities.
"We wish to thank all who took the time to speak to officers"

While Essex Police appear to be getting on the front foot on the issue, Thurrock Council's input into the process is to be reduced.
The council was recently honoured for the work of its transport safety officers, who had a particular duty regarding safeguarding females, but budget cuts in the budget mean officers are being made redundant.
It was only in October last year that the council and its partners received an award for the work done by its officers, who had a particular responsibility to providing high-visibility reassurance patrols regarding violence against women and girls.
In the wake of the award Cllr Victoria Holloway, cabinet member for place and the environment said: "It is a testament to our Transport Safety Officers and the council to have been recognised with this award for outstanding commitment.
"Our TSOs have been working hard in partnership with Essex Police to tackle anti-social behaviour, as well as violence against women and girls by maintaining a consistent visible presence on our trains.
"The award is welcomed news for the borough, as we continue our efforts to ensure Essex is safe and free from anti-social behaviour and crime."

Among those leaving the council is environmental enforcement officer Simon Ward whose work and experienced has previously been considered as invaluable and exemplary, so much so that he was nominated to receive the award from the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme.
