Residents get chance to share their views on local government reorganisation

THURROCK Council today (Wednesday, 16 July) launched its public engagement inviting residents to share their views on issues important to them as proposals to reshape local government across Essex progress.
The authority has until the end of September to prepare and submit its thoughts on how best Thurrock can be represented in the new tiers of governance that the government plans to introduce.
Westminster's aim is to simplify the current system which sees an county council (Essex), two unitary authorities (Thurrock and Southend) and 12 other district councils across the county.
A new country-wide mayor will be introduced to work in partnership with new unitary councils, of which there are likely to be three, four or five – with current authorities negotiating and proposing different solutions.
Cllr Lynn Worrall, leader of Thurrock Council who prefers a system of four new councils, said: "Any changes to local government must work for the people of Thurrock. That's why it's so important that as many residents as possible take part in this first stage of engagement.
"We want to understand what matters most to you—whether it's transport, housing, financial stability, or something we haven't considered yet. Your views will help shape our plans and ensure they reflect the priorities of the communities they affect. Please take a few minutes before Wednesday, 27 August to complete our short survey.
"The Government has made it clear: change is coming. But before any final proposals are submitted this September, Thurrock Council is asking residents to complete a short survey and share what matters most—whether it's better transport, more affordable housing, or stronger local decision-making.
"This is about more than just changing council boundaries – it's about building a better and stronger future for Thurrock.
"We will be working hard to make sure that we get the best deal for Thurrock residents in any new local government structure in the county.
"We want a system that works for our communities, reflects our identity, and delivers real value for residents. If you care about where you live, now is the time to speak up.
"This is just the beginning. Thurrock Council will be hosting events and meetings across the borough in the coming weeks to ensure everyone has the opportunity to get involved and have their say. Please keep an eye out and join these important discussions, when and where you can."
