Rising costs likely to bring an end to town's Christmas lights but forum is looking at innovative replacement

IT looks likely that there will be a reduced level of Christmas lighting in Stanford-le-Hope this year and the traditional street illuminations will be replaced with a community effort to decorate the town.

In previous years the street Christmas lights have been organised by the Stanford Forum and supported by donations from local businesses but soaring costs mean it is improable that will happen this year.

Fiona Monica from the Forum says: "We have now received the quote to install this year's Christmas lights. The cost of all the lighting is £3,000.

"The Forum does not have £3,000 and with the cost of living crisis we do not know if we are able to raise this. We have reached out to a couple of businesses in the area but we do consider we will not have enough. Last year the few lights put up around Stanford cost £1,500 and just to do that again would cost £1,800.

"We have considered an alternative this year which links well with the Christmas Market and the lights on tree switch on. We have thought of asking the residents to come out on Saturday, 3 December and help decorate the trees and greenery around the town using solar lights, battery lights, reflective strips on Christmas balls, and Christmas bunting (triangles decorated by children of the area).

"We will continue to try and raise money, any ideas /contributions will be appreciated!"

Fiona and the Forum can be contacted via their Facebook page.

The Christmas Festive Market, run in conjunction with St Margaret's Church, will be taking place on Sunday, 4 December from 1pm to 7pm. It will include 'Carols round the Tree' and much more!
