Smoke rises over docks

RESIDENTS have reported a fire at the Port of Tilbury, with a likely location being the EMR scrap site.

Essex Fire and Rescue at the docks.

A statement from the port of Tilbury said: "We can confirm there was small fire on board a cargo ship at the Port of Tilbury this morning (28.07.26).

"Essex Fire and Rescue reported to the site and have now safely extinguished the fire. Our team on site are continuing to support the relevant authorities."

Essex Fire and Rescue's log reads: "Firefighters are at the scene of a fire on-board a cargo ship at Tilbury docks.

"Crews are assisting on-site firefighting teams to safely extinguish the fire.

"Time of call: 07:12pm.

"Attendance: 6 x fire engines, 1 x foam unit, 1 x water bowser."

Cargo ships loading scrap at the docks have occasionally experience in-hold fires (such as a 5,000-tonne scrap metal fire in December 2023, reported on Thurrock Nub News.

It was later confirmed the site of the fire was the berth used by EMR. The site has been the scene of previous fires, including a major blaze in 2024.
