STUDENTS at Ortu Gable Hall in Corringham impressed civic dignitaries during a day of celebrations to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

To kick off the day's festivities, borough mayor Cllr James Halden and education portfolio Cllr Barry Johnson were taken on a tour around the school where they visited the new Zen Garden and met with the BTEC Construction students who built it from scratch.

Both said they were very impressed with the hard work the students had put into the garden.

Students enjoyed carnival games.

The two councillors were also treated to a march past by the school's army cadet unit before meeting and talking with the cadets about their dedication and handing out awards.

Cllr Halden said: "Myself and Cllr Barry Johnson are deeply impressed by the cadets' display and their dedication to join a noble division and portray their pride to their school and wider country."

"While the mayor and Cllr Johnson ended up back in the Zen Garden for afternoon tea and cake, students had a fantastic jubilee party waiting for them on the playground.

Pupils enjoyed carnival games, a burger and ice cream van, slush puppies, candy floss and scones.
