THE operators of the Navigator Fuel Terminal in Grays have refused to say what happened at the site after an alarm went off this morning (Saturday, 11 February) sparking concern among local residents.
Residents were roused by the alarm at around 6.15am.
Many of them reported an increased smell of a diesel-like substance in the air but no information on what happened is available, other than the fact that the alarm, went off.
Essex Police and Fire services were not involved in the incident.
Thurrock Nub News asked Navigator what had happened but they have declined to say.
A short statement issued this evening says: ""We can confirm that the alarm sounded on Saturday morning did come from the Thurrock facility.
"Navigator fully acknowledges the responsibility placed upon us to operate and maintain our terminals in a safe and sustainable manner.
"Our terminals are largely automated, and the alarms system form part of an internal process undertaken when a truck driver or operator requires assistance.
"As soon as the alarm sounds, the terminal investigate before operations resume.
"This is a standard terminal process which is widely adopted within the industry and local area.
"The alarms are tested at 11am every Thursday at the Thurrock facility."
When pressed further about what had happened, the spokesperson said: "We've nothing to add to the statement I'm afraid."
The site, off Oliver Road, is host to 80 fuel tanks and is an offloading port with three jetties. It distributes fuel across the south of England via HGV tankers.
