Thurrock's annual panto has continued to set new records, defying council intentions to shut the theatre.

STAFF and supporters of the closure-threatened Thameside Theatre in Grays have thanked borough residents for their support over Christmas and into the new year as the battle goes on to convince Thurrock Council the venue is viable and worth saving.

The Conservative administration at the council have long expressed the opinion that the borough will be better-served by closing the theatre and 'sharing' Thurrock's culture offering through venues across the region.

However, after a record-breaking run and good advance bookings for forthcoming shows, campaigners trying to save the Thameside say it is not only viable, but worth investing in.

The  council is currently consulting on the council's 'cultural offering' (make you views know via this link: https://consult.thurrock.gov.uk/cultural-events).

And also in the future of Grays central library and Thurrock Museum, which are also houses in the Thameside complex in Orsett Road in Grays. See: https://consult.thurrock.gov.uk/library-museum-relocate

On its official Facebook page the message to the borough public that the Thameside should remain is clear.

Staff say: "We're overwhelmed with gratitude as we write this message to you, our incredible community of supporters.

"Thanks to your unwavering enthusiasm, our recent pantomime has broken records and set the stage for a fabulous year ahead, with many new exciting shows coming to the Thameside.

"Theatre is more than just a stage; it's the beating heart of our local community. It fosters connection, sparks creativity, and brings joy to all who experience it. Your commitment to the arts at Thameside Theatre is not just about entertainment; it's an investment in the cultural fabric of our community.

"As we reflect on the success of our recent pantomime, we're reminded of the vital role each one of you plays in ensuring the future of the arts in Thurrock. Your continued support helps us keep the spotlight shining on our stage for future generations to come.

"We have a humble request for our incredible supporters: consider making the magic last by booking just one more show this year.

"Don't let another year slip away without experiencing the joy and wonder of Thameside Theatre. Your choice to attend just one more show could make all the difference.

"Let's keep the arts alive in our community, together. Your support is the backbone of Thameside Theatre, and with your help, we can continue to create moments that last a lifetime.

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being the driving force behind our success. We can't wait to welcome you back to your Thameside."
