Thanks to support from across the borough and beyond, traditional event is hailed a success and the Show will go on!

ORGANISERS of the Orsett Show have thanked sponsors, supporters, exhibitors and residents for their presence at this year's event, held on Saturday (2 September).

Initial figures, still to be confirmed, show that numbers were up year on year and thanks to generous support the charitable event looks set to continue.

The impact of covid and the cost of living crisis prompted fears before this year's event that recent losses in hosting it might be repeated but plans are now already being made to ensure that next year will see the continuation of a traditional show that goes back more than 100 years.

The show is largely run and organised by a committee of volunteers, who then have a back-up army of groups and individuals who work in the preparation, hosting the day itself and then in the show breakdown.

This year the show suffered a blow when thieves stole a large amount of electric cabling two days before the event, but everyone rallied round to make sure things went on.

Show secretary Georgina Clark said: "We hope everyone who attended the 115th Orsett Show on Saturday had an enjoyable time.

"A big thank you to our headline sponsor Port of Tilbury and to each and everyone of our sponsors for their continued support of the show.

"Orsett Show would not happen without our great team of volunteers who work tirelessly in the months leading up to the show and on the day itself and we thank each and every one of them."

Paul Dale, Asset and Site Director of The Port of Tilbury said: "What a great day it was at the Orsett show on Saturday. Our team were at the showground with our stand and had a brilliant time meeting everyone.

"As a major employer in Thurrock, we were honoured to be the main sponsor of this fantastic community event.

"Well done once again to all the organisers and we look forward to 2024."

The show featured a number of marquees featuring the skills and crafts of local people, local businesses, schools and the borough's heritage.

One of the exhibitors at the heritage marquee was the Tilbury on Thames Trust, showcasing its project to restore and bring the former cruise terminal rail station back to life as a community facility.

Members of the trust were asking local residents for their opinions on what could be done with the historic building. The thoughts of local people are vital as the Trust puts together its bid for funding.

Among those who visited on Saturday was South Basildon & East Thurrock MP Stephen Metcalfe.

Stephen meets with Mike Tarbard and John Purkiss in the heritage marquee.

Mr Metcalfe said: "A big thank you goes out to all the organisers and stallholders at this year's Orsett Show – the 115th Show!

"Congratulations to the winners of the horse and cattle shows. If you couldn't make it this year, jot down the first Saturday of September for next year and support our local businesses and farmers!"

Next year's show will be on Saturday, 7 September.
