RESIDENTS face a wait to see if Thurrock waste bin collections will resume tomorrow (Wednesday, 14 December).

The collections were suspended yesterday and today because of snow and ice.

Thurrock Council confirmed a second day's cancellation this morning, saying: "Due to the ongiong icy conditions there will be no household wheeled bin waste collections today.

"The situation is being assessed on a daily basis and collections will resume as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience."

In neighbouring Basildon, its council reported many collections would resume today, after all were suspended on Monday. However, there were some service cancellations in Wickford and Billericay.

And in Brentwood the council also had a pro-active response with some crews out on Monday and more today, though it did say to resdients: "The weather is causing delays to our collection service. The advice is to leave your sacks and bins out if possible so that it can be emptied in the usual way. If we don't pick up as expected, please bear with us and continue to present the bin each day, as we try to catch up."

Though no more snow is forecast inland (there is a possibility on the sea coast), it remains probable that there will be little improvement in underfoot conditions and no thaw.

The Met Office forecast for this evening says: "Another cold evening and night, with a sharp frost. Isolated snow showers will mainly affect coastal districts to bring a risk of icy patches. Further freezing fog developing inland. Minimum temperature -4 °C."

And things don't look ,likely to improve much for the first part of tomorrow as the forecast predicts: "Another cold day, but with early frost and freezing fog gradually clearing to give some limited brighter spells. Further wintry flurries are again possible. Maximum temperature 5 °C.
