THURROCK councillors who worked closely with a former director of children's services at the council have paid tribute to her after hearing news of her death.

Carmel Littleton joined Thurrock Council as Head of Learning and Universal Outcomes in 2010 and took the director's post in 2013.

She left the authority in 2015 to take up a lead post with Islington Council.

Her death, after a battle with cancer, was announced yesterday (Wednesday, 30 June).

Borough councillor John Kent, who was leader of the authority for much of her time in service said: "Carmel was a great servant to Thurrock children and their families. She brought compassion to the post and a full understanding of the role of herself, her team of staff and the children's service department.

"When she left Thurrock I described it as a great loss to the borough but today there is a much deeper loss for her family and friends to whom I send my deepest condolences."

Cllr James Halden echoed that view, saying: "I am deeply, deeply upset to hear of the passing of Carmel. Public service is always an honour, but she leaves a very tangible legacy like few others."

After teaching for six years in inner London schools, Carmel qualified as an educational psychologist at University College, London, working as an educational psychologist in increasingly senior roles at Tower Hamlets, Camden and Islington.

She also headed up services for gifted and talented pupils, youth offending and a wide range of services for vulnerable children and families in a number of London Boroughs including Islington where she returned as Corporate Director of Children's Services.
