FIREFIGHTERS have released details of their role in this evening's horrific incident at a borough accident blackspot.

They cut two people free from vehicles after the smash at the junction with Marshfoot Road and the A1089 slip road which happened just after 5pm today (Tuesday, 13 April).

A statement from Essex Fire and Rescue says: "Both casualties were released by 6pm and left in the care of the Ambulance Service."

The incident was reported earlier on Thurrock Nub News where we remarked on the number of incidents that have occurred at the junction in recent times - through Thurrock council has denied it is problem area.

However, many residents have recalled crashes on social media, and local word councillor, John Allen, who witnessed the aftermath of today's crash, says the time has come to do something about the junction.

He has already written, this evening, to fellow councillors and members of the authority's Highways team, saying: "It's with sadness I bring to your attention yet another major accident at the junction of Marshfoot and Bretts Farm, Tilbury.

"I'm sure many of you would agree that this junction really needs looking at not only to reduce the speed of motorists that use this stretch of road but to absolutely try to reduce casualties and possible fatalities?

"Perhaps the implementation of a roundabout would reduce both speed and severity of injury. This junction seriously needs a rethink."

In August last year, after one of many crashes, the council told Thurrock nub news: " "Marshfoot Road is under review as part of the A126 safety improvement project, which we were awarded funds for by the Department of Transport. We are waiting for funding to be made available for this three-year project.

"In January this year, we undertook resurfacing on the slip road approaching the area and this junction is also subject to a two-monthly safety inspection. Where the roads meet has also been included in a programme to renew the right turn pocket and junction markings.

"In total, 17 accidents were recorded at this junction within the past five years prior to January 2020. Since January 2020, one accident has been recorded.

"We urge all drivers in our borough to drive in a safe, legal way and follow clear signage and road markings in place at busy and difficult junctions.

"All main routes in Thurrock are assessed on an annual basis, and we welcome feedback from residents at [email protected]."
