A VAN fire on the QEII bridge this afternoon (Wednesday, 4 August) has caused huge tailbacks on the clockwise M25, tailing back to past junction 29.

Traffic is also backing up on the Kent side.

The fire happened around 3pm and brought traffic to a standstill as the bridge was closed.

Adjoining roads including the A13 quickly became congested with several miles of queues either side of Junction 30/31 in both east and west bound directions.

At 5pm Highways England issued the following statement: "Due to an earlier vehicle fire at the QEII Bridge at the A282, severe delays and congestion are being reported on the M25, at Lakeside and the surrounding area.

"The latest information is that lanes three and four have been released past the scene after all traffic was held.

"Crews continue to treat the road surface.

"Due to congestion, the Dartford Tunnels may have to close intermittently and traffic is being monitored.

"Please drive carefully and check your route."
