Views sought by council on its plans to make Grays safer

By Nub News Reporter   20th Jan 2026

THURROCK Council has issued its latest consultation - declaring it wants residents' views on how to make Grays a safer place.

Residents, businesses and visitors are being invited to have their say on new plans aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour in the town,

The council is seeking views via the consultation on proposals to continue measures that tackle behaviours such as street drinking and other issues that can negatively affect people's day-to-day lives and enjoyment of the town.

The council says that by extending these measures, it aims to continue supporting 'a safe, welcoming environment for everyone who lives in, works in or visits Grays'.

It is proposed to extend a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in Grays.

A PSPO is a legal tool used by councils to help prevent anti-social behaviour in public places. It allows the Council and the police to set rules for certain areas, such as restricting street drinking, where this behaviour has a negative impact on the local community. The aim is to make public spaces safer and more welcoming for everyone.

The current PSPO in Grays is due to expire on 31 March this year. The Council is proposing to extend the order for a further three years, covering areas within the Grays, Thurrock and Grays Riverside wards, in response to 'ongoing concerns' raised by residents and local businesses.

Following feedback already received, the Council is also considering extending the area covered by the PSPO. The proposed additional locations include:

  • Church Path up to the junction with Wharf Road
  • Grays Beach Riverside Park, including Thames Road
  • The foreshore area up to Anchor Court

How to take part

The council says all responses will be carefully considered before a final decision is made. If the PSPO is extended, the outcome will be published in March 2026.

The consultation is being led by Thurrock Council's Community Safety Partnership Team.
