More than 1,000 people are estimated to have visited Coalhouse Fort over the weekend.

AROUND 1,000 people were estimated to have visited Coalhouse Fort over the weekend when its doors were opened to the public for the first time in some years.

As recently reported on Thurrock Nub News, after a couple of years where the future of listed military building and park has been fallow, a new initiative by Thurrock Council, which owns it, is seeking to shape a positive future for the site.

And yesterday (Saturday, 12 October) and today, residents were invited to attend and meet the team charged with finding solutions and shape the future of the site.

Among the many who attend was Thurrock Council's portfolio holder for community, arts, culture and heritage, Cllr Val Morris-Cook who said: "Coalhouse Fort is a cherished part of Thurrock's rich history, and this weekend's open days demonstrated just how much enthusiasm and interest there is for its future.

Visitors could learn about the fort's history - and plans for the future.

"With around 1,000 people attending to explore the site and contribute to the consultation, it's clear that the Fort holds a special place in the community's heart.

"I am incredibly optimistic about the future of the Fort and want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this event possible.

"It was a particular honour to meet the family of the late Jonathan Catton, a passionate local historian and dedicated advocate for the Fort. His tireless efforts to secure a bright future for this historic site continue to inspire us all.

"I truly believe that by working together, we can turn his vision into reality and ensure the Fort thrives for generations to come."

There was also a good turn out for the BATA Open Day yesterday at nearby East Tilbury.

Bata's Open day also drew plenty of visitors.

The open day, a reflection on the philanthropic work of BATA and the community that grew around its shoe factory, will include tours around the factory off Princess Margaret Road - and visits to the heritage centre, based at the village library on Princess Avenue (RM18 8ST).
