Volunteers spread the word about Re-engage
By Nub News Reporter 22nd Mar 2026
TRIBUTE and thanks have been offered to volunteers – and a call made for more to come forward – as a borough-based charity continues its mission of supporting local vulnerable, elderly and lonely people.
Thurrock branch of the Re-engage charity Re-engage shared an Outreach Volunteer day with volunteers from Balfour Beatty, led by the company's social impact manager Lauren Edmunds.
The volunteers worked in partnership with the London Gateway Freeport Community Investment Fund and helped spread the word about Re-engage – the only UK charity dedicated to tackling loneliness among people aged 75 and over.
Balfour Beatty volunteers and Re-engage volunteers visited local pubs, restaurants and even a golf club, speaking with venue managers about hosting a tea party once or twice a year. They also chatted with local people about becoming volunteer drivers – a rewarding role that involves bringing guests to and from the tea parties and enjoying the afternoon together.
Re-engage regional organiser Loraine Coleman said: "What a wonderfully successful day we had. We were truly overwhelmed by Balfour Beatty's team's enthusiasm and energy – they were fantastic.
"Our expectations were exceeded, and the results were incredible.
"A very big thank you to Lauren, Balfour Beatty and the London Gateway Freeport Community Fund for their wonderful support.
"If you know any local businesses or community groups in and around Thurrock that may be interested in hosting a tea party, or anyone who would like to become a volunteer driver, please get in touch."
