JUST one of the borough's four Isthmian League sides marked the opening day of the new season with a win.

It came at Parkside where Grays Athletic beat Bury Town 2-1 in the North Division.

The Blues were two ahead at half time with a pair of goals inside a minute from Joe Paxman who opened the scoring on 39 minutes and moments later Ryan Sammons netted.

Jake Shaw pulled one back for Bury on 68 minutes but the hosts held on to win.

East Thurrock United were well beaten in the Isthmian Premier, going down 3-0 at Cheshunt.

After holding their own for much of the first half, the Rocks were two down by the break with goals for the Ambers from Theo Osinfolarin (37) and Reece Beckles Richards (43)

Ken Charles wrapped up the scoring nine minutes into the second half.

Returning Avelely striker Alex Akrofi marked his comeback in Millers' colours with a 50th minute goal at AFC Sudbury in the North Division but Luke Hipkin equalised for the hosts with 12 minutes remaining and it remained 1-1.

Tilbury went down 1-0 at home against Brentwood Town whose goal came on 36 minutes from former Avelely player Tom Richardson.
