AVELEY FC has announced the departure of goalkeeper David Hughes this morning.
In his time at Parkside, Hughes made 139 appearances for the Millers, registered 41 clean sheets and even scored from a goal kick in the club's 4-0 Isthmian North victory over Basildon United.
He played a pivotal role in last season's Isthmian North championship campaign and also played for Millers during their epic FA Trophy run when they reached the quarter-finals a couple of years ago.
But his career highlight possibly came when he played for East Thurrock and had a starring role, winning the Man of the Match award from home fans when the Rocks travelled to Hartlepool in the FA Cup First Round proper in 2014. Rocks lost 2-0 but Hughes put in a superlative perfomance.
Prior to joining The Millers in August 2018, Hughes was at Harlow Town, where he helped them to promotion from the Isthmian North as the Hawks' number one. He made 30 appearances and won the play-off final against Hornchurch 3-1 in 2016. Hughes went on to play 82 more times for Harlow in the Isthmian Premier League before departing to join Aveley at Parkside.
A club statement this morning said: "We'd like to wish David Hughes all the best for the future."
As the news was announced Hughes took to social media to say he was without a club for the first time in 15 years, adding: "I'm a free agent. Enjoyed my four years at Aveley, achieving a quarter-final of FA Trophy, promotion and getting to know the many good people at the club. Good Luck for the future. What will be will be."
