A FURTHER five libraries will open in Thurrock over the next two weeks, following the reopening of libraries in Grays, Belhus and Corringham in July.

From the week commencing Monday 21 September, libraries in Tilbury, East Tilbury and Chadwell will open, with Aveley and Blackshots due to reopen from the week beginning Monday, 28 September. All five libraries will operate under reduced hours, and measures will be in place to keep residents and staff safe in line with government guidelines.

The Blackshots library reopening is being welcomed locally following a petition and campaign from youngster Polly Cornelius.

Residents are encouraged to use the self service machines to borrow, renew and return items as part of the reduced service, and browsing time will remain at 30 minutes. Limited public computer access continues to be available in 45-minute slots each day.

Cllr Deb Huelin, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “We know how much our residents value their local library and we have worked incredibly hard to get more libraries reopened. Please remember that your library visit will be a different experience than before, so please be patient with our staff.

“Throughout the summer, children and young people have been taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge which finished in Thurrock on Saturday (12 September). Well done to all those who took part online and congratulations to everyone who completed the challenge.

“Our library service continues to adapt so well throughout the pandemic and it’s great to see regulars and residents embrace what we have been able to offer.”

More than 21,000 people have visited Grays, Belhus and Corringham libraries since they reopened in July.
