In a true show of community spirit, the residents of Stifford Clays came together to honour the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Following an act of vandalism at the Remembrance Garden in Blackthorn Park, the community responded with compassion and determination. Local charity Get Started Art, Councillor Mark Hooper, and residents Brian Squance and Sharon Innes joined forces to fund and reinstall a new "Tommy" silhouette.
The original figure, lovingly restored by Get Started Art in partnership with the local Scouts, has now been transformed into a moving art installation featuring heartfelt messages of remembrance and hope from the young people themselves.
The ceremony, supported by a touching poetry reading from the children of William Edwards School, was organised by the Stifford Sea Scouts and their associated groups. Nearly 200 local residents gathered to pay their respects.

The children's readings and the solemn tributes offered by all who attended stood as a powerful testament to those who suffered and sacrificed during the First World War, and to all servicemen and women who continue to defend our freedom and way of life today.
The garden, looking resplendent thanks to the dedication of volunteers Jill and Davina, provided the perfect setting for this poignant occasion. The generosity of the Stifford Clays Social Club, which opened its doors to provide refreshments for visitors, and the presence of so many children from the Scouts and local school, reflected the true heart of this remarkable community. Together, their efforts have created a lasting legacy of remembrance that will be cherished for years to come.
Get Started Art founder and local resident David Barton said: "The residents of Stifford Clays should feel immensely proud today. They have not only honoured the heroes of war, but also celebrated the unity and spirit of our own community."
