Borough is set for season of Remembrance
THURROCK's season of Remembrance will begin this weekend with the traditional march and service in Purfleet on Thames.
The annual event will take place on Sunday, 3 November with participants assembling at Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre at Centurion Way, (RM19 1ZZ) from 10am.
At 10.30am a procession will march to the War Memorial at St Stephens Church or those less able can ride on a vintage bus provided by Ensign.
A service of remembrance will take place at 11am by the memorial.
Afterwards participants stroll or travel back by bus to the centre, where refreshments will be available from the tea bar.
Sunday will also see a short service and wreath-laying starting at 1.55pm at the memorial by the entrance to West Thurrock Memorial Park on London Road.
Armistice Day on Monday, 11 November marks the anniversary of the agreement signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, at 5.45am for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I.
The Armistice took effect at eleven in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.
On the 11th this year, many businesses will come to a brief halt at 11am and there will be a national commemoration and silence, but the bulk of the region's memorial services will take place over the previous two days.
A service hosted by Chadwell St Mary Royal British Legion starting around 10.30am at Orsett War Memorial (opposite the Whitmore Arms).
The 'official' civic service will take place in Grays at the High Street war memorial on Sunday but councillors and dignitaries will be present at many of the other services, which will also be supported and led by ex service organisations, particularly the Ryoal British Legion.

The venue traditionally brought a close to the borough's month of remembrance but when its doors closed several years ago that ended.
A service did take place two years ago but it was not open to the public, though it is hoped – following a successful recent open day – that this year's event will be, though there are likely to limitations regarding accessibility.
If your community is hosting a service and it is not listed, please let Nub News know by email to [email protected].
Thurrock Museum is hosting a free Armistice Day Exhibition between Saturday 2nd - Friday 15th November.
The exhibition features six of the war memorials in Thurrock and commemorate local men from the First and Second World Wars.
