THURROCK Council has cancelled plans to hold a Christmas Market at the historic Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury,

In recent weeks the venue has played host to two open days and a Remembrance service and the authority has pledged to restore and reopen the venue, four years after it was closed to the public.

Thurrock Council's portfolio holder for community, arts, culture and heritage, Cllr Valerie Morris-Cook is spearheading the drive to bring it back to life, saying: "Coalhouse Fort is a cherished part of Thurrock's rich history, and the open days demonstrated just how much enthusiasm and interest there is for its future."

The open days were well attended.

Cllr Morris-Cook announced at the open days that the council was planning a Christmas market this year, but now she has had to pull the plug, saying: "It is with great regret that I have to inform you that despite every effort the planned Christmas Market will not take place this year.

"We have come across technical issues that are currently preventing this from happening.

"Please accept my sincere apologies with a commitment to do better."

Meanwhile the council is continuing its search to create a board to help run the council-owned fort.

Cllr Morris-Cook added: "I hope that everyone that wishes to be considered for a place on the advisory board has or is applying.

"A huge thank you from me for your passion and determination to bring life back to our jewel Coalhouse Fort. I wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas."
