A TILBURY councillor has advised residents in the town they have a direct role to play in helping combat the problem of rogue bike riders - often young people - who have become a blight on the area's roads, pavements and open spaces.

The problem was highlighted this week after a teenage boy was injured after crashing spectacularly on Feenan Highway. Police are investigating that incident.

Cllr Allen Mayes who represents the Tilbury Riverside and Thurrock Park ward says it is a problem that requires efforts from everyone, including residents, if it is to be countered.

He told Thurrock Nub News: "Residents have come to me in the past few months complaining of motorbikes being ridden dangerously, street races and general anti social behaviour caused by irresponsible riders across Tilbury.

"I have urged every single one of them to report it to the police as it is they who will take the action against them.

"I have spoken with the Conservative Council Leader, Rob Gledhill, on this and he tells me that Essex Police have issued nearly double the number of s.59 notices to those misusing motor bike and quadbikes across Thurrock so far this year compare with last and have seized a number of bikes.

"This has happened because residents have been regularly reporting incidents where they live to the Police on 101 and the police have responded accordingly.

"He also tells me the council and police are working closely on a public space protection order to further empower both the police and council to take action easier, but as with everything - it needs evidence.

"No one wants to see anyone hurt, be they rider or residents going about their business, so I would urge every one to report every incident they see or experience to the police on 101 as soon as they can. If you have dash cam, security cam video or pictures of those breaking the law keep it as it will help the police take action later.

"I can fully understand why residents go on to social media to complain about this but cannot stress enough that direct reporting will lead to action to make our streets and open spaces safer, faster."
