COMMUNITY stalwarts came together in the Thurrock Mayor's parlour recently to say thanks and pay tribute to a retiring policeman who has left his mark across the borough through decades of service.

Former PC Neil Brand is now enjoying civilian life but was delighted to attend a formal gathering at which his retirement was marked.

His former colleagues and members of Thurrock's Community Policing Team came together at the Civic Offices in Grays, for a reception hosted by mayor Cllr Kairen Raper.

Among those attending were Police District Commander: Chief Inspector Tony Atkin, local councillors and members of the Thurrock Community Safety Partnership - who all paid tribute to Mr Brand for his dedication, commitment and work within borough communities over his lengthy career.

During the latter part of his service Mr Brand was one of Thurrock's Community Safety and Engagement Officers. For four years, Neil was out in communities, conducting various different engagement events, relating to every type of community from every age range and ethnic background.

Some may recognise him for the Let's Talk events throughout Thurrock. Others may recognise him from the various youth groups or vulnerability groups he often made massive efforts to see and speak to.

Prior to that he became very well known through his 14 years working as a 'Schools Liaison Officer'. Even before retirement, he held that role dear to his heart, which was often seen through all his continued work with local brownies, rainbows, beavers, cubs, guides, scouts and other youth groups.

Presenting him with a Community Service Award, Cllr Raper said: "Neil has been an integral part in building relationships between Essex Police and the communities in Thurrock and this award is testament to his commitment and dedication. It was made more special because he was nominated by his peers within your communities.

"Neil doesn't like to be made a fuss of, but his award was well deserved and he's truly a character that will be missed by all!"
