Overnight roundabout closure will enable criticised road signage to be changed
THE recently fully reopened Orsett Cock roundabout will be closed overnight tomorrow (Tuesday, 5 July) to allow contractors to change the road markings that were criticised by residents and councillors.
As reported on Thurrock Nub News last month residents and were unhappy with the new road signage on the roadabout - which was rebuilt as part of the A13 roadwidening project - with Chadwell St Mary residents in particular saying it was difgficult to read which lane or direction to take.
Their cause was taken up and highlighted by councillors, most notably Chadwell St Mary's Sara Muldowney.
And the council has listedned - with changes to be made tomorrow night.
A statement from the council says: "When the third lane on the Orsett Cock Roundabout opened to traffic, helpful residents and local drivers reported a lack of road markings showing Chadwell St Mary which could cause drivers to be in the wrong lane. Our design team looked into the comments and agreed the markings could be modified to help reduce confusion.
"Based on this useful feedback, we have produced new designs and we have instructed our contractor to carry out the modifications during an overnight closure of the roundabout on Tuesday, 5 July.
"Feedback like this is key and we appreciate everyone's support and helpful contributions."
Meanwhile works to fully commission street lighting alonmg the widened road continue and the council says it expected them to be completed in September. Until then, a temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place on the A13 between the two junctions – Stanford-le-Hope and Orsett – for night time safety reasons.
Overnight lane closures on the A13 are needed to complete work on roadside embankments at the Orsett junction. These lane closures will have minimal impact on road users. Other lane closures will be needed to install new signs on verges on the A13 eastbound approach to the Orsett junction and on the A13 westbound approach to the Stanford-le-Hope junction.
Work continues to the north-west of the Stanford-le-Hope junction to build a new balancing pond for surface water. This work will complete in Autumn 2022, but no road closures or lane closures are needed.
A lot of landscape planting has already taken place with more set for the winter planting season at the end of 2022.
