Thurrock plans a celebration of Black History Month with events across borough

By Nub News Reporter   4th Oct 2025

THURROCK is hosting a programme of events and activities this October as part of Black History Month.

Black History Month is an annual observance that takes place in the United Kingdom every October. It celebrates and recognises the contributions of black people to British society and history. The event was first officially recognized in the UK in 1987, and since then, it has become a part of the country's cultural calendar.

Thurrock Council is at the forefront of the activites and says: "Across the next month, we're inviting residents to come along to some amazing local events and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black communities to our borough, and across the country."

Explore black British history through film and archives

Thurrock's Libraries are offering free access to the BFI Replay 'Black Voices' Collection, a curated archive of video content showcasing decades of Black British history.

If you have a valid library card, you can view this material in any Thurrock library — just make sure to bring your own headphones.
