Aveley 0, Gateshead 3

NATIONAL League Gateshead proved to strong and denied Millers the opportunity of playing in the FA Cup first round proper for only the second time in their history.

Aveley found themselves on the back from the off as Gateshead asserted their dominance, reflecting their superior league standing.

They controlled the first half, with Aveley forced to defend deeply, allowing Gateshead to impose their style of play.

Gateshead's attacking duo, Kyle Hurst and Josh Home, were particularly active.

Home managed to fire a shot goal-bound, but it was blocked effectively by Aveley's defence.

Jacob Butterfield also tested Aveley's goalkeeper Joe Wright with a powerful shot from the edge of the area, which narrowly missed the right-hand post.

As the first half drew to a close, Gateshead capitalised on a set-piece opportunity. With five minutes remaining, captain David Ferguson found himself unmarked from a corner and headed the ball home from close range, giving the visitors a well-deserved lead.

Manager Brett Munyard's post-match verdict:-

In the second half, Aveley showed more determination and intent, seeking a way back into the match.

They nearly equalised ten minutes into the half when Ollie Peters struck the ball first time after a poor clearance by Gateshead. However, Gateshead's goalkeeper, Tiernan Brooks, made a commendable save to keep his team ahead.

Aveley's hopes of drawing level were further dashed when their appeals for a handball in the penalty area were dismissed by the referee.

Gateshead then doubled their advantage, with Hurst tapping in the ball after it was played into the centre of the box.

Despite Aveley's persistent efforts, they were unable to breach Gateshead's defence.

The visitors sealed their victory with five minutes remaining. Dom Telford and Jacob Butterfield both had attempts on goal, but were thwarted by Wright. However, Telford was not to be denied for long. He scored from close range on his return from injury, securing Gateshead's place in the first round.

The Millers are back in Isthmian Premier league action after a month of FA competition exploits when they welcome Lewes to Parkside on Saturday, 18 October, 3pm kick off.
